Discussions and Critical Reading

Throughout the observations of the English classes in Udon Thani International School, Farm Schools, and Don Bosco Vitthaya School, the teachers, consistently employed discussion and critical reading as integral components of the teaching and learning process.


1. Interactive Discussions:

Mr. Thomas utilized interactive discussions as a cornerstone for promoting critical thinking and active student engagement. In the Mathematics class, for instance, collaborative learning took center stage. Students actively participated in problem-solving through peer discussions and group seating arrangements. The teacher encouraged students to freely exchange ideas and employ strategies like "RUCSAC," fostering a collaborative environment. The use of multimedia elements, such as strategy videos and geography-themed games, provided a dynamic dimension to discussions and made the learning experience more engaging.


2. Critical Reading in English Class:

In the English class, critical reading was evident in various activities. An audio narrative complemented the story map analysis, encouraging students to think critically about the text. The incorporation of a point-based reward system added motivation to the learning process, aligning with the Programme of Inquiry and emphasizing holistic development. The emphasis on acting out designated story paragraphs not only encouraged critical reading but also fostered active participation and a deeper understanding of the narrative.


3. Open-ended Discussions in Social Studies/UOI Class:

In the Social Studies/Unit of Inquiry (UOI) class, open-ended discussions were a key feature. The teacher initiated discussions by posing anticipatory questions, sparking curiosity about migration factors. Students engaged in peer discussions, exploring their migration experiences and delving into the historical context. Multimedia resources, such as migration factor videos, were used to enrich the inquiry-based learning process. Assigning different migration articles for individual analysis further promoted critical reading and a deeper understanding of push and pull factors in real-world scenarios.


4. Varied Approaches in English Class:

In the English class, Mr. Thomas employed a dynamic approach to education. For instance, students were tasked with retelling a story through role-playing, encouraging them to critically engage with the narrative and fostering effective communication and teamwork. Allowing students to teach parts of the story themselves encouraged critical thinking, as it exposed them to different perspectives and interpretations. The teacher's decision to continue drawing the story map on the board as supplementary material further reinforced critical reading skills.


5. Analyzing Fossils in Science Class:

Even in Science class, critical reading was applied during the exploration of fossils and fossilization. Watching a video on the subject brought it to life, and subsequent activities, such as highlighting places on a world map where specific fossils are found, required students to read and analyze information critically. This hands-on approach expanded not only their scientific knowledge but also their ability to critically interpret geographic data.


6. Differentiated Approaches in Different Subjects:

The diverse teaching methods across subjects highlighted Mr. Thomas's commitment to tailoring approaches to the specific needs and characteristics of each subject. Whether it was through collaborative problem-solving in Mathematics, critical reading in English, open-ended discussions in Social Studies, or hands-on exploration in Science, the teacher consistently applied discussion and critical reading techniques in a differentiated manner.
